Post Christmas reflections

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, we did even without a kitchen! Victoria asked me the other day if we would be sitting down for dinner in front of a large log fire, well this was the best we could do.

I was very pleased with myself over the holiday as I managed to supply Lettuce, Parsnip, Leeks, Carrots and Jerusalem Artichoke from the garden and the greenhouse for the Christmas meals.

I also managed to get out in the garden for an hour or so on Boxing day and plant my garlic, normally I would do this in November but I forgot! I also turned over the soil in one of the veg beds, I have been growing field mustard in it as a green manure and I thought it was time to dig it in as it was getting quite large.

My sister in law bought us an interesting present. It is a selection of organically raised vegeatable seedlings. Basically you send off a form and when the seedling are ready they dispatch them to you. I think this is a great idea and although I normally raise my veg from seed they do tend to take over the greenhouse. This will mean I have a lot more space in the greenhouse this spring to raise other plants for the garden. I look forward to being able to report back on the quality of the plant when they arrive.

  1. Hi Gary - glad you had a good Christmas. I am contemplating getting outside today but it was one degree when I looked earlier so I found something more important to do!!!! I have bought some veg seedlings in the past although not organic - my only issue with them is that its an expensive way of growing veg!

  2. Hi Gary, Your fireplace looks lovely, all decorated for the holidays. I hope you were able to sit in front of it and enjoy your meal. I know you have a lot of work ahead in your kitchen! I think I have an idea why you forgot to plant your garlic: you've been blogging way too much:) It takes over my life if I'm not careful:) But, it is SOOO much fun, isn't it??!! Well, please enjoy the rest of 2008 and I look forward to watching your garden emerge as the weather begins to return to spring (SOOON, I hope:)) Jan

  3. Your coal fire looks really cosy. I don't know how cold it is where you are at the moment, but it's bloody freezing here in London.

  4. Hi Victoria, It's not as cold as it was yesterday not such a heavy frost. Coal fires always look nice and cozy but sadly most of the heat goes up the chimney!

  7. Garden ready vegetable seedlings - a perfect gift for a gardener! It is expensive to buy mail order plants, but worth it sometimes. It's the only way I can get some of the chile plants that I like growing... at least until I can perfect my seed saving techniques.

Glad you had a great Christmas, complete with home grown goodies. Happy New Year!

  9. Hello Gary, I so impressed that you could get Lettuce, Parsnip, Leeks, Carrots and Jerusalem Artichoke from the garden! The only thing I got is Kale. It is freezing cold here and even the greenhouse is cold it is an 'ice house' now, it has frost on the windows :-(
Cosy fireplace you got there! xoxo Tyra
