In his wonderful book 'The Ivington Diaries' Monty Don describes how he feels that growing roses is a man thing as it appeals to the 'measuring thing that men slip into' and it also brings out mens feminine side.
I agree with him, I am coming to the conclusion that you can never have too many roses, and this year they have been magnificent.
I actually avoided them for a while, too many painful memories of weeding amongst the standards and shrub roses in my parents garden.

A nice selection of Rose Gary. My grandfather was into roses in a big way, so I suppose I kind of associate them as being a 'man's plant'. Personally, I am just beginning to appreciate their beauty and look forward to adding more to my garden.
