Always remember to pick your greens.

I left a few heads on the broccoli this year and the resulting flowers look fantastic. You always forget how lovely the flowers of some veg are. We all grow alliums of course and Peas and bean give a great display but most things we stop before they flower. I think the only brassica that you see in full flower (please correct me as I am sure there are more) is Oil seed rape.

  1. Crambe is a brassica and a very worthy garden plant in all it's guises, from the diminutive Crambe maritima, to the more stately and ethereal C. cordifolia. Another common brassica, is the Wallflower(Erysimum), much loved in spring gardens.

I suspect there are many others too.

  3. I have a Broccoli Romanesque flowering in the back garden and another in the ground in the front flower bed. They have lovely yellow flowers.

This is a fantastic photo - very pretty!

  4. Brocolli is the Marmite of the gardening world - you either love it or hate it. One of my favourite brocolli quotes (actually I only have one)is by George Bush snr. He said: 'I do not like brocolli. And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me it. I'm President of the United States and I'm not going to eat any more brocolli'. You can just imagine him stamping his foot as he said that.

  5. I can see the jut of his jaw.

I'd thought all brassicas smell rotten if allowed to flower. This doesn't seem to be the case after all.
